G2 Esports dropped a 1-2 Play-Ins Upper Quarterfinal to FURIA, with koalanoob taking MVP, and the reigning Stage 1 champs now have to grind through the lower bracket.
Two weeks ago vlr.gg ran the headline "NRG takes down LEVIATÁN, G2 surges in Americas week three." That surge just hit a wall. FURIA beat G2 1-2 in Sunday's Play-Ins Upper Quarterfinal, and it wasn't close in the way the scoreline suggests.
The Map That Should Have Been the Story
G2 opened well, taking Split 14-12. Then Haven went 13-10 to FURIA, and Breeze went 13-9, both punctuated by koalanoob finding reads nobody else on the server seemed to see. He walked away with MVP, and by the third map's closing rounds he was basically playing a different game than everyone else, threading angles and stealing space G2 kept leaving open.
Why I'm Not Panicking About This One
Here's the thing that keeps this from being a real crisis: G2 are the reigning Stage 1 champions sitting on a points cushion that already makes them close to a lock for Champions Shanghai regardless of how Play-Ins shakes out. This isn't Sentinels needing to win six straight best-of-threes just to stay alive. It's the defending champs getting outplayed on a random Sunday with basically nothing on the line but ego and seeding.
Where I Land
That's exactly why it's worth writing about. A team that's actually desperate plays desperate Valorant, tight and predictable. G2 didn't look desperate against FURIA. They looked comfortable, then got picked apart anyway. That's a harder problem to fix than nerves, and it's the one I'd actually be worried about if I were wearing the jersey.
