G2 Picked the Wrong Easy Match
G2 chose Xi Lai Gaming as their comfortable opener in the Masters London bracket draw. XLG responded with a 2-1 reverse sweep.
G2 Esports chose to play Xi Lai Gaming.
Coach JoshRT picked them in the bracket draw. The comfortable opener before the real tournament starts. There's a video of G2 players celebrating the pick. Watch Shanks' reaction if you need the full picture. I'm still thinking about it.
XLG went 13-4 on Ascent. BABYBAY finished that map with 33 ACS.
The Maps
They dropped Lotus 7-13, which felt like the expected result checking in on time. XLG lose the first map, find something, come back. They've done it twice already at this tournament.
Then Ascent happened. NoMan on Jett, 335 ACS. Lysoar posted 52 kills on Omen support on a single map. G2 could not execute through Cypher walls and they couldn't break the rotations. BABYBAY had 33 ACS on G2's own map pick. That's the number that'll follow this result around. XLG closed it 13-4 and the whole thing was over before anyone adjusted to what was happening.
Split was cleaner on the eyes but the same story. happywei ran 94 total kills across the series. XLG managed the economy, closed the rounds G2 let slip, and finished 13-9.
What It Means
G2 drops to the lower bracket and has to beat FUT to stay alive. XLG goes to the Upper Semifinals against EDward Gaming.
The question before this tournament was whether a Chinese squad could make real noise at an international event. XLG answered that in the Swiss stage. Now they're answering it again, against better competition, in a context where the stakes actually matter. Whatever comes next, they've already changed something about the conversation.
G2 thought they'd picked the easy match. They were very wrong.
