MIBR Beat EG in Three, Then LOUD Swept Them Out in Two

MIBR beat Evil Geniuses in three maps on Saturday. LOUD beat MIBR in two on Sunday. Same weekend, opposite endings, and the second one is the one that matters. MIBR's season is over.

The EG Win Was the Story I Wanted

MIBR dropped Lotus in overtime, 16-18. That's the kind of map loss that should have spiraled a team that opened the stage 0-1 before I called their week two "perfect." It didn't. Sunset went their way 13-10, Haven closed it 13-9, and zekken and aspas both had to actually be the answer in a win-or-go-home spot instead of padding a stat line against a team already cooked. That's a different kind of win than the ENVY sweep I wrote about in July.

Then LOUD Happened

Less than a day later, LOUD took MIBR's own pick, Lotus, 13-6. Sunset went the same direction, and there was no third map. No overtime drama to hide behind this time, just a team that had nothing left after grinding out an elimination match the day before running into one that was fresh off a bye week and an upper bracket run.

Where I Land

I called MIBR a real superteam in July off the back of a 30-kill zekken game and a statement sweep of ENVY. I still think that read was correct for what it was measuring. What it didn't account for is a double-elimination bracket giving a tired team zero rest between a three-map grind and a rematch with a team that had been sitting on fresher legs all weekend. MIBR's stage ends here. The read on the roster doesn't have to.
